Could this be one of our most common concerns or fears?
The fear of failure? Your boss pulled you into a “private meeting”. Despite putting in the enormous hours at work you just didn’t manage to close enough deals; Meet enough clients; set up enough meetings; and so on. “Why aren’t you meeting your Goals?” they ask. Despite doing everything you know, it just did not happen for you this time. So how do you handle this stressful situation? It is very easy to go into a spiralling downward mood. It is much more challenging to realise that despite your best efforts things just did not go as well this month or this season. Is there a good reason for this? Then perhaps explaining it to your Boss can help with their understanding, and may help with adjusting your targets or goals moving forward. What happens if you work alone? Then you are accountable to yourself for your own work, or lack of it. This made me ask. “What requires more from you? The Courage to continue, or a Positive Mental Attitude?” I have done a lot of courses, reading, and learning about Positive Psychology and the Power of Positive thinking. But I believe that sometimes it takes more courage than just positive thinking? When you are challenged with a problem, be it your work, your health, or your relationships, often, it can actually be harder to keep going. If what you have always done is not reaching your goals then you can adjust to achieve. But what about when you have done everything that you know how to do, and you just cannot achieve what you set out to do? Positive thinking will always beat negative thinking, without a doubt. But, what happens when you need to keep going through a problem? I believe that it takes more courage to keep going. If you are in a job that is highly pressured and you are not achieving their expected targets, then you can do a number of things: · You could get more training, · talk with other team members about how they are achieving their goals, · talk with your boss, · or get another job that suits your talents and might be a better fit for you. In areas that are out of your immediate control, the answers as to how to move forward are not always so easy to see or to implement. Recently, after a very long flight overseas, I felt unwell, and attended their local Emergency Department. I was admitted to hospital for 8 days. Despite doing things by the book, I developed DVT’s and blood clots in my lungs from the long flight. (A dangerous condition to be in). Having been put on blood-thinners and now back home safely, I reflected that my life was definitely saved due to modern medicine and talented and caring doctors and nurses overseas. Sometimes, being on medicines can cause other issues that one has to deal with as well. Over the years, my emotions and thinking has been challenged with digging deeper inside myself to find the courage to keep moving forward with the various actions that are required of me. So I thought, is it courage, or positive thinking, that is moving me forward. I felt sure that if I did not have my thinking in a positive frame of mind, then depression would creep up on me. I had also experienced depression, and this was not fun. But apart from positive thinking, I felt the strong need to muster the courage to continue, to enable me to be in the best health and wellbeing possible. Fatigue has its own way of exhausting our internal strength as well. It is more challenging to find the energy to continue when all your resources are being used to the maximum. How can we muster the strength needed in times of our life’s trials? When a Loved One passes on, our world can be turned into a seemingly dream-like state. Things are happening around us. People come and visit, but it can appear like a blur at times. Despite people being well-meaning and wishing us well, it can be a challenge to think positive that all shall be well. The courage to continue is often harder in my opinion in this case. Being an entrepreneur, many of the day-to-day tasks are upon your shoulders. You need to carry the load when well or not. The “Buck” stops with you. Despite doing all the right things in moving your business forward, the results sometimes aren’t reflective of all the time, hours, and strategies implemented, that should technically work well for you. The experts’ advice is that if you do the steps that you took, that you should achieve good results. So how do you re-focus and keep going, if your results are just not showing up as being positive? This is one of the most challenging aspects of being self-employed. What if you can’t afford to hire experts in the area that you wish to work? Starting any business requires long hours and determination to succeed, and the perseverance to keep going when the “chips are down”. With technology being so freely available and accessible in the 21st Century, I believe that help is at hand via the internet. While the information is staggering on any field that you choose to read about, the information that is offered can be high quality and helpful. Sifting through all the information can be daunting to say the least! But if you sort through the posts, you are certain to find the gems that can give you a boost to help you readjust and then get back on track to doing what you do best. To keep going can be tough. The saying, (1) “When the going gets tough, the tough get going”, is not entirely fair to those of us who keep going and still might not achieve what we set out in our plans or desires. Instead of doing as you always did, perhaps you can look back on what you have been doing. Is there another way to do something? You might get different results? Worth considering? By reflecting on what is happening in a challenging area of your life, you are in a better position to take advantage of a new strategy. This can then help you achieve what you wish, even when it is out of your control. This can also assist in managing and reducing your stress as well. So what are your thoughts? The origin of the phrase, has been attributed both to Joseph P. Kennedy (1888–1969),[1] father of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, and sometimes to Norwegian-born American football player and coach Knute Rockne (1888–1931).[2]
