Light and darkness. Both extremes, of which create vivid images in our mind. Light? Easy. We see colours, people, buildings, nature, animals, and so on. Darkness? Another dimension altogether. What do we see? It is really what we don’t see. The absence of light. Darkness feels different (to me, anyway). I am a fan of light. Always have been. I love Daylight Savings Time when it comes in, and I feel a loss inside my soul when we have to Turn Back our clocks. What is it about darkness that makes it feel (to me) so encompassing, and overbearing? What am I missing within the darkness? The feeling and comfort that light brings me! I also feel uncomfortable when I cannot see things around me. It gives one extra security when one can see their surroundings. I must admit that the absence of light allows me to sleep better! We all know the feeling of a familiar environment in the dark. Such as within your home. We can stumble around looking for a door or a light switch. We seem to know where it is. Being in a house with which you are unfamiliar can be daunting, for example, in a black-out- to say the least! I remember being overseas many years ago, being billeted out (minded) at a house, in my teens. The other teen in their house could speak English, but her parents could not. I was showering late at night, and there was a blackout. I could not see anything. I was really uncomfortable as you can imagine! Their mother was concerned. I could hear it in her voice. But she nor I could do very little about it all. Except for me to get out of the shower and fumble for my clothes. :) So how can we reconcile darkness and light? We need both. That is the physical creation of our world. We have daylight and darkness- or near-darkness at night: The moon interestingly provides us light in cycles through the month. I would suggest that many of us value the moon, when there is no moon, and enjoy it especially when there is a full moon, as it can be spectacular. There is an amazing energy around the time of the full moon as well. So how do we take the physical aspects of darkness and relate this to our own human existence. What is the connection? Darkness is the “absence of light”, a concept that we have already covered. Light can also be likened to our soul. We have a physical body, which houses our soul. Our soul expresses itself in our world through our deeds and actions. We, as human beings, have the unique difference when compared with all other creation, of being given the freedom of choice. So we can choose to do acts of kindness or choose acts of violence, hurt other people, and so on. The quickest thing that can bring light to darkness is of course, light! Light from a lit match, a torch, an electrical light bulb, or any other external light source. My suggestion here is that our soul can also help to provide light when darkness prevails through the conscious actions of our physical being, expressed through the initial desire of our soul. We can bring light where there is desolation, destruction, violence, hurt from other people, and in areas where there is the absence of good in the world. Darkness is the absence of light. There are many deeds and actions of good in the world. Somehow, our News bulletins and news articles don’t feel that we want to know about these actions? They don’t make it to the headlines very much! Why? They don’t sell. People must then be more interested in bad news than good? I don’t believe this though. Intrinsically, we are all capable of love and kindness. If we have experienced good in the world we may naturally gravitate to this way of being and seeing the world. How do people “choose” evil? An interesting question -for another article. The main point here, is that if we turn off the constant barrage of bad news from our news stations, and focus our own positive and supportive actions each day- on improving our immediate world, with family, friends, and our community, this really does have ripple effects that can flow throughout our own city, and even the world. Are you on social media? I am certain that you have experienced how some of the posts can go Viral! It is really amazing to watch and see. (For those not familiar with Viral posts: They are internet activities posted, that can have a significant amount of comments, shares with other people, and an enormous amount of views from people living around the world). So if your focus is on the good that you can do in the world, there is less time to ruminate on the less-than-good in the world, and more time to emphasize the positive aspects of our humanity. Quite often, people gather together to assist other people, either known to them or not, in times of a crisis. Whether within a community or as a result of an environmental catastrophe. While some of these events are not preventable, it would be great to be proactive and seek out to help others in times of calm and peace? I am the light needed in the world Your soul brings light to other people. I am sure that you have felt this, either with friends, family and so on. Each one of us has the ability and potential to bring light in to the world in our own unique way. What you say and do will be different from the next person. In most cases, you can influence an outcome positively, by the way you do or say something. We all resonate with the giver of information differently. So you never know the impact that you have on other people. By not adding your light and influence, the people around you, and therefore, your potential ripple-effect throughout our world, is a missed opportunity. We all miss out! Watch a candle burn.
It is nothing much to look at, prior to being lit. It may look pretty, but that is the external facade. Light it, and you will feel the glow and warmth of the feeling that the candle will bring you. Many people love to use candles to meditate. A candle is the perfect example of your soul. The candle unlit is your body: the vessel that carries the flame. The wick acts as the conduit or link, to the candle holding the light. When lit, the wick brings oneness between the candle body and the essence of light. So you are the candle Body, and your soul is the Light: When combining together, they both have enormous power and strength. For joy, and light. Use your light for love, for positive action, starting in your home, your friends, your community, being aware of the ripple effects that your actions have, in changing the whole nature and direction of humanity in our magnificent world. You may ask, “How can I alone, make anything change in our world”? Yes, you are one person, but that is all it takes. You might be the one person who inspires other family and friends to undertake or emulate your inspiring acts. They may take an example of what you do, and develop an act that transforms another part of our humanity. You never know until you act. You never know the influence your actions have on other people. You do have power with in you. Not the ego of power, but the essence of love, kindness, and humanity. The effect of our speech and actions have immense effect on those around us. Be the light needed in our world. Remind yourself, “I am the light needed in the world”. Shine on now.
