"Think positive"!, Most of us can probably recall a time when someone around us yelled that statement. Think positive.... Seemingly so simple, isn't it? Why can it be such a challenge at times, and other times, it seems to be quite easy in comparison. One person may breeze through a situation, and think and speak positively. For another, in the same circumstances, the whole world seems to loom large and threatening for them. They think, speak, and feel negative. Perhaps it is our own nature that predisposes us to the way we react to our world? Some may think it our genetic make up that makes us react the way we do. Some may think it who we are exposed to when we are young. Some other people may consider the circumstances that make them think the way they do. Perhaps we are naturally anxious? Does that make us more negative? Are the people who are laid-back in their approach to life more positive? Does thinking through all the "what if's" in the future cause some negative thinking? If a person is more positive, does that mean that they don't get so anxious? Maybe. When we have been to a meeting and someone says, "but what if this happens?", it can often be a situation that might occur, in the worst-case scenario. Many professionals will tell you not to dwell on the negatives of anything. Does that fit in with your own nature? If we think about an event in the future, then perhaps we can consider the "what if's" in our mind, and then consider dealing with them if they happen? Or perhaps we can come up with strategies to deal with possible or potential unfavourable outcomes? Many professionals will suggest that you don't dwell on the "what if's" in the future, as they rarely happen. Another idea is that we view all future events as positive events that are going to work in our favour? Say, "Think well, and it will go well". We could likely experience less stress this way. Some would suggest this way of thinking is being overly confident. Others will say that this is the way they live their lives. So, what can we do, that can aid our "Thinking Positive" in the future? Here are 5 ways to more Positive Thinking. 1) Decide what is in your control. If you have some control over a situation, then you can often plan for alternative actions or scenarios. You can then think about possible outcomes, but stay on top of your desired outcome, and think positively about the event in the future. 2) Know what is out of your control. You can often have influence over areas that you can control. But things like the weather forecast and transport delays are not generally in your control. You can make a contingency plan for unfavourable weather, but ultimately you have no control over the weather. Once you have a strategy in place for things out of your control you may feel more at ease with the situation. This can then help make you feel and think more positively! 3) Other people talking negatively. We can think positively, and act positively. Sometimes we find that people around us can talk negatively. This can make us start to feel less than positive. How can we stop this cycle? It can be hard to move away from people at work. But perhaps changing the subject, or frame of reference so that a person can view things from a more positive outlook. Address their concerns if it is something in the future. You may not be able to convince them to view things as you do. But you can put a different perspective on a situation if it is appropriate. 4) Read uplifting material. Just as it is important to feed your body nutritious food so that it performs at its peak, it is important to feed your mind with positive thoughts to keep it thinking positive. How? There are many mediums offering us ways to take in positive messages. The internet offers Information Blogs, articles, facts, and there is a place for Facebook, twitter, and the like, that share people's positive thoughts and inspiring messages. Motivational Quotes certainly uplift our minds, and aid in our feeling and thinking positive. Non-fiction books abound on the ways and benefits of Positive Thinking. Choose an area that you feel most comfortable continuing with on a regular basis. 5) Meditation, relaxation, sleep Meditation has been around for a long time. Its positive benefits are numerous. Lower blood pressure, calmer mind, clearer thoughts, lower anxiety, and many more benefits are widely acknowledged. Meditation can also assist in aiding your mind to think more positively too. There are many meditation methods available to try. Guided meditation is a good place to start if this is a new practice for you. Relaxation has been talked about for a long time as well. When the mind and body is stressed, it is harder for a person to function at their optimum level. This can affect our thoughts and emotions. Aim to do something for yourself to de-stress and relax. Exercise for some people works really well. Taking a bath, reading, calling a friend and so on. What works best for you? Sleep. The one thing all humans need, in order to survive. How much we need has been discussed in depth, by scientists. It can be different between members of our family. Ideally, scientists suggest somewhere between 6-8 hours of sleep per night for adults. There is a lot of differences of opinion on this subject alone. This naturally can be less or more for you. The quality of your sleep is considered of prime importance, more than the hours you sleep. (Being ill can also affect your sleep and how you feel.) Whether we work best in the early morning or later in the day can also affect how we function too. Lack of sleep is known to greatly affect our health and well-being. Needless to say, when we have had less sleep, we don't always think clearly. We probably are not as positive in our thoughts, feelings, or speech either. So, getting quality sleep and enough sleep is important to how we think. On a positive note, all these ideas can be incorporated into your day relatively easily. It starts with a decision to change the way you think, feel, and speak. Decide to express yourself in a positive way, and watch how other people react to you. Notice how their own language can often change to being more positive, as a result of your own language being positive. Your speech may influence a positive change in other people around you, and at your workplace. That has to be a positive thing for us all!
